How to tell the age of an emu?

 < 1 month old​
​
- 
Approximately 12 cm tall

- Will begin foraging very soon after hatching,  but will remain close to the father and each other
​
- Have yellowish-white and black striping

1 - 3 months old

- Approximately 25cm tall

- Still retain striped pattern

3 - 5 months old

- Approximately 65 cm tall

- Stripes will begin to fade

- Plumage on the head and body will gradually become blacker ​

5 - 12 months old

- Approximately 1 meter tall

- Completely black to tan-brown feather colouring (similar to the adult but the head remains darker)

12 - 18 months old
​

- Juveniles reach adult height
(1.5 – 2 meters)

- Weight is similara to the adult

- Black plumage on head
begins to recede and bear bluish skin  on the neck    and head is revealed.
​
- May remain with father until 18 month of age.

18 + months old

- Adult plumage and colouration of neck and head complete

- The adult emu stands between 1.5 and 2 meters tall

- Males may be seen with chicks once they are 2 - 3 years old
